Well, we’ve been galavanting everywhere this past few weeks and i’ve been doing some serious travelling, mainly from my computer to the kitchen while Jules has been living LavidaLoca at Glastonbury…hopefully, and i’m not promising anything, he will put up a little post talking about his adventure with The Latin Dub Sound System and ZieglerCo. down at Glastonbury…so that to come.
Meanwhile, I’m pretty confident that you’ll get more in depth reviews somewhere else and that the Chief’s new album will be everywhere right now but this isn’t a review apparently and we are trying to encompass a more reasonable attitude with regards to some of the more bigger acts out there that we don’t actually hate. But be assured you will never see U2 being discussed here…shit…did i just mention U2…fuck it. So…
I’m not sure about the Kaiser Chiefs…i’ve had a like/hate relationship with them…i could never say i loved them but there is no denying that they have written some great anthemic pop tunes, the thing is i always got the feeling that they belonged back in the 90′s britpop era. Their songs and songwriting fit into that category along with Blur and Pulp touching on the satirical edge with stories about the downfall of the social etc and they probably would have had legendary status by now had that been the case.
With the new album we still have that social commentary as satire element, which i think is a good thing…intelligent lyrics that have something to say is always a good thing in my book but i find myself again feeling unsure about the Chief’s. Its not that i don’t like his voice, its not that i don’t like the tunes, its not that i don’t like the sound…i guess its an english thing…the music ‘gene pool’ in england is so shallow…on this album for instance we have songs that are obvious in there influences, and that perhaps wouldn’t be a bad thing if it wasn’t for the fact that those influences happen to be from the 80′s…once again. On a couple of tracks here, at times, i swear the chiefs are doing their best impressions of Heaven 17 and The Specials and then there is the blatant move to add 80′s electronica elements to please the trendy kids. Is this a bad thing? I dunno…these aren’t horrible tunes by any means and the electronic elements don’t hurt the songs and i think they may even enhance them…but it just annoys me a little.
I only got this album this morning so it may be that my comments on here are a little premature and this album may grow on me in time and there are some really interesting tracks on here…though i do think on this first listen the Chiefs are a little confused, they have tried to reinvent themselves while keeping their integrity as pop indie songwriters but i think they may be trying to cover too many bases here. I would never go through an album track by track analyzing it to death and i’m not going to start now, i have never been an ‘Album’ person anyway, in the sense that i have never liked a whole Album by an artist and the reality is that it is vary rare for a truly great album to appear with standout tracks all the way through…it happens but not often. At least the album is a bit of a whopper as far as the number of songs goes…more for your money right!!!! Its Quality not Quantity apparently. So this is a pretty shit album right? Wrong!!!
The Chiefs have succeeded in growing in maturity both within their playing and their songwriting and i get the feeling that they are pushing their music in a slightly different, less anthemic teenage revolution direction which is good, attempting to evolve on all fronts which is what all artists should aspire to do and they almost succeed but for a few more dull moments than there should be, but an interesting journey none the less.
For fuck sake is the album any good?
Its better than Girls Aloud thats for sure but fuck…what do i know!!!!
New Single ‘Little Shocks’ – it doesn’t suck.
Kaiser Chiefs – Little Shocks by AceVideos
[Jules] Can I pipe up here? KC lost me with the Kids song which was a nursery rhyme pastiche of everything they started out being. Personally I think they had something when they advanced early Blur on their first album then they ran out of ideas (or never really had any in the first place) and started sounding like bad copies of themselves… much like Hard-Fi did).
I haven’t heard the album yet (which by the way is available in a pick n mix fashion… they have 20 songs and you can buy 10 and they’ll be burnt to a CD for you in the order you choose, I believe) but I’ve just listened to the video above and as harmless as it was it didn’t do anything for me other than make me realise the band have realised they sounded like poor copies of themselves and decided to sound different. Still don’t really think they have any real original ideas, though Si’s intellectualisation of them above all sounds far and sensible to me.
I have no problem with bands sounding out of their time as long as the songs are cracking. Everyday I love You less And Less still crackles with bitterness and spiky exhilaration for me. I’ve forgotten this one already.
Das Pop: The Game from Big Active on Vimeo.
Great new video and song from the Das Pop guys…kind of like Mad Max after eating too many sour sweets.
Now…this is a new release from Sony…it really pains me to say that word on here but hey ho.
Cults are a three piece from New York who have been whipped up by Sony…for obvious reasons.
This band fit in as a great mainstream/alternative crossover. Now the boys will probably give me crap for liking this band but they have some really good pop songs. No, i don’t mean the kind of pop songs that Cheryl Cole releases i mean the kind of pop song that teens should be listening to…fuck it…this is the kind of pop songs we should all be listening to. Again, there is a lot of this stuff coming out of the states that sounds kinda surfy, Beach Boys playing in a garage kinda music and its fucking great!!!
Listen i’m not gonna do the whole running through the album and discussing songs one by one and talking about high points and low points and crap…mainly cos its boring, but mainly cos i’ve been in bands and i know how much work it takes to write songs and get them sounding how you want them to sound and then going out and gigging your tits off to get them out to an audience, especially for any band that plays and writes their own music…so i tell ya what…just listen and watch the vid below then go listen to the album and then come back and tell me what you think so i can tell you to fuck off cos i don’t give a shit. Except for the fact that they are on Sony…hey ho.

As you are well aware, we at EyeSeeSound don’t do ‘reviews’…we just put up what we think is great music and let you decide whether you like it or not…
So, this is not a review.ok.
Fleet Foxes at the Hammersmith Apollo.
So, i arrive at Hammersmith, it brought back memories of my first ever big gig, i came here to see The Psychedelic Furs in the early eighties…twas great…and it was all seated as i remember. Anyway…
Got in, brought an overpriced watery pint…nothings changed there, and wandered down to the ‘stalls’ to get a glimpse of the support act who were sounding pretty good…didn’t know who they were so it was nice to hear something new…but…i had an inkling that i had heard this band before…then wow…they played ‘I love You’ by the Bees…it was the Bees…I’ve been a fan of the Bees for years and always wanted to see them but, being a music fan who doesn’t actually normally like going to gigs i hadn’t actually got round to it, odd i know, how can i call myself a music fan and not like live music…maybe thats for another time…you don’t want to hear me moaning about overcrowding, bad sound, can’t be arsed to stand up these days blah blah blah.
Anyway…nice surprise, brilliant band,go buy their music,go watch and listen to them they’re wonderfu;. Here is the latest single. A cover of the Mamas and Papas song from way back in the 60′s…kids.

Fleet Foxes
I really like this band. Of course i do. Out of the may new Folk Influenced acts out there Fleet Foxes stands out as, well, pretty much up there as the best of the lot around right now…i’m sure there are some more great bands out there…in fact i know there are, Dry the River (English band not quite hit the big time yet…you can hear a track by them on our mixtapes section) but of the bunch being promoted by the mainstream press Fleet Foxes are top of my list.
I have never heard such beautiful melodies live in my life…i mean it was as perfect as it sounded on record, apart from the dire sound quality that the sound man giveth…what is it so important that the bass be louder than everything else until it sounds almost like we’re heading into dub folk (did i just coin a new phrase!?!?!?).
Anyway…regardless of the poo inducing bass sound…it was amazing and beautiful sounding…especially when they went into a medley of songs from their first album which is a fantastic record.
Anyway. great gig, two great bands. If we could get either of these bands in for a live session that would be amazing…no harm in trying.

Being a music lover, a consumer of music on CD and vinyl, an abstainer of paying for music in digital form (it doesn’t exist to me, it’s just 1s and 0s) and a part of a fledgling DIY record label I spend a fair bit of time thinking about and musing upon the current state of the commercial side of the music industry… the bit where you/we/me part with hard cash for musical product.
What has tended to gaul me most about the cries and sobs from the Majors and their bedding partners is that everything is being blamed upon P2P downloading. That it is this ‘theft’ of music which has lead the Biz to the current state it is in.
Aside from the fact that most the figures They bandy about with regards to how much P2P piracy has cost Them are embellished/sexed-up to make Their woe that much more oooh! They fail to acknowledge that a very high percentage of the music downloaded for free would never have been bought in the first place, and if it hadn’t been downloaded then it would have been borrowed, heard in a record store, rented at a library, ripped from a mates CD or just plain ignored.

Lovely debut album from this experimental post lo-fi electronica outfit. Great instrumentation topped off with a gorgeous distinctive vocal.
Currently there are no videos to embed, but we know they are releasing the gorgeous House soon and so we’ll embed that when it’s out there.
Latest featured album is the blistering debut album by Electro Indie Rockers What Would Jesus Drive in full on the site. We are also, in the name of transparency, their DIY label but that doesn’t stop us objectively loving this great album… in fact we’re rather flattered and excited that they are so happy to work with us as this is a genuinely great album.
Love this tune from the brooklyn based four piece. This is taken from their debut album (i think) ‘Animalore’.
Enjoy!!!

A beautiful album from Rakafeed, which is Richard Northen and incorporates Skin’s guitarist Elliot King, and the legendary Bjork and Massive Attack string arranger, Sally Herbert.
It’s ethereal leftfield ambient dance and as i’ve already said, bloody beautiful. Two videos embeded below, including the breathtaking visuals of the Colder video, and the band can be found here: http://www.rakafeed.com/ and the album bought digitally here: Digital Shop.
For the next couple of weeks you can hear the album in full as our featured player (player to the right).
An album we bought and think you should too:
F***ing amazing second album from this experimental rock/noise outfit. For me (And no, i’m not a good music journalist so bare with my comparison) it’s like a genius child of Frank Zappa and No Means No. They don’t have a proper music video yet so we’ve included a track from YouTube with a still image, and below that a live video recorded by a single camera… never my favourite sort of recording but worth seeing them live we think.
Visit their bandcamp shop to get the download or their label for CD/Vinyl.
This is a track from their Album ‘STEEPLE’.
We love this band at eyeseesound…but then we are suckers for good prog rock!!!!
I can’t believe they use a flute!!!! Beautiful!!!
I bloody love this video…the song is cool too…but the video is awesome.
An album we bought, and think you should:
£5.99 from amazon on CD
£15 from amazon on vinyl
or buy direct from the band: Bodies Of Water. I bought my vinyl from them directly and that made it that little bit more special.
