Edition 004 of the magazine

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

It’s been a while, sorry about that, but as ever probably worth the wait with another load of brilliant music, film and art with some great interviews and reviews too.

Biggest difference for those who have been here before is that we’ve ditched the 5 separate PARTS and put less pages (though still 21 of them) in a single file, which means you can view it as we always intended, which is as a magazine.

For those of you not previous visitors this will mean nothing unless you go to the archive and read, watch and hear Editions 001 to 003, which of course we highly recommend.

The other bonus to this new format tweak is we should be able to get an edition out every month now, so that’s nice isn’t it?

Really excited to have interviews with Three Trapped Tigers, Bill Ryder Jones (of The Coral), Chloe Early (amazing Irish artist) and Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe who did a three man semi-acoustic live session for us too which was kind of stunning.

In addition, as ever, there is a lot more great music, a couple of briliant shorts (one funny, the other quite sombre yet stunning) and more.

Anyway, this edition includes:

Page 01: Bill Ryder-Jones: interview
Page 04: The Cassette: short film
Page 05: Crushed Beaks, M+A, Girl Muscle
Page 06: A Moment Of Silence: audio visual art

Magazine: Edition 003

Saturday, November 5th, 2011

For all our fans waiting on the edge of their seats, sorry for the delay in getting this one out. Being little DIYers we are at the mercy of real lives (in this case me painting my flat and thinking it would only take a week and ESS being involved in the production and release of a Hypnosis training DVD… ah, the things we do in order to fund this little baby).

Anyway, it is finally finished and out. We have also made the decision to release them about every 6 weeks now as doing one a month was a killer given how long it takes to put each magazine together both in terms of getting the content but also the coding. Still, there is so much in each edition that we doubt you’ll get through it all in a couple of visits, so it will be there for you to dip into over 6 weeks when you’re in need of discovering something new and brilliant.

Not too much to say other than TOM WAITS HAS A NEW ALBUM OUT IN OCTOBER.

This is the title track from it.

Lana Del Ray – Video Games

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Hahaha!!!! Look at her top lip!!!
I meant to post about this girl previously but it slipped my mind until someone sent me a link to this today, so i’m posting about it now.
There isn’t much info on this lady that i could find, it says on her facebook page that she lives in New York…ok. I think she puts her own videos together from footage of herself and old newsreels and whatever…it looks kinda cool…has this tragic hollywood vibe to it.
The song is gorgeous and she is certainly a looker in the vain of Priscilla Presley and Jackie Kennedy and she has the lovely voice to go with it which is reminiscent of Dusty Springfield and that kind of era (no other names seem to spring to mind at the mo), …which is nice.
This track, along with another called ‘Blue Jeans’ which i haven’t heard, is released on October 9th this year and i’m sure she’s gonna go down well. With the demise of ole Amy W (thats not to say she is anywhere near as vocally talented as Amy) there is more than enough room for Lana’s easy listening tragi-pop. I’m a sucker for anything that is nostalgia driven while still managing to be contemporary.
Above and beyond this though…i want to draw attention to her top lip in this video which seems to be fighting to get away from the rest of her face…brilliant!!! She is still hot though. Great song!!!

Simon.

Disappears live set supporting the Arctic Monkeys – mp3

Disappears Live 8.6.11 Chicago by DISAPPEARS

We did a little piece on Disappears’ psyche noise rock in edition 001 of Heads Up. We also had their sophomore album Guider as one of our featured albums (actually it is on the homepage of the site as I write this), and bloody marvelous it is too. In fact, I bought it on vinyl (though still awaiting it’s arrival from the wonderful people at Norman Records.

Anyway, I follow them on twitter and yesterday they posted a full set they played supporting the Arctic Monkeys, taken straight out of the desk and it sounds great. So go check it out a their soundcloud [soundcloud] in all it’s glorious 43 minutes and 24 seconds… or listen from the embed in this post (if it isn’t at the top of the page, try refreshing… sometimes i have to, don’t know why, but hey, it’ll be worth it).

mp3 player speaker from old vinyl

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Rather cool, I have to say. Non powered amplifier speakers for mp3 devices, etc., made from moulding old 12″ vinyl. They are made by London designer Paul Cocksedge [website] and if you’re in London on August 27th then pop along to the Roundhouse with your vinyl and you may be able to get him to do one.

You can also buy some he made earlier (now if only Blue Peter had shown us how to do these, their ratings would have been up a notch or two).

We greatly approve.

Mimas European Tour: Sept/Oct 2011

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Weird and wonderful Scandinavian post-rockers Mimas are doing a European tour in support of the Lifejackets album, so those in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic can watch them… with support from Dad Rocks, offshoot project of Snævar Njáll Albertsson, which makes a saving on the support band costs :) Dates below videos:

Label Love: helping PIAS labels screwed by the rioters

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Label Love website

London burned in early August 2011, and with it a whole heap of indie label CDs and records which we in the Sony Distribution warehouse which was torched. Many music fans are rallying to try and help the labels, particularly the smaller ones, who got royally screwed by the situation.

Label Love are part of the helping process and this is what they have to say about themselves:

Thanks for stopping by the page. I have no doubt that if you’re here you’ll have heard the news that the PIAS distribution centre in Enfield has been burnt down during the London riots. What you may not be aware of is that the warehouse contained the physical stock for many of Britain’s Indie records labels. The subsequent loss of income and cash flow problems that this act of mindless vandalism will bring about may well be enough to push many of the smaller operators out of business.

Our aim is to try and rally the music industry, both on the artist and the audience sides, and see if we can raise some money to see those affected through the tough times ahead.

This is just a holding page at the moment but more details will be posted here as and when we have them.

Re:Launch – Phase, er, 4 or 5 is now go.

Friday, August 12th, 2011

So, after a couple of discussions between me and Si about the original site being too confusing and cluttered with so many ‘formats’ and our SEO being slaughtered by the fact all band names were kept hidden away in .xml files we decided to rip it up and start again.

I think that conversation was had just under 3 weeks ago. Just now, 23.45 on Friday 12th August we just uploaded the new site along with the first edition of our new, and now only, format the Heads Up magazine.

So what you may think? Well, have a peak. (more…)
