About Us
The whole EyeSeeSound project is the vision, time and effort of two people... on the whole. We both got a bit fed up of having a lot of generic, sub-standard and homogenised music filling the media and decided that we'd try and create something that offered great unchampioned... or at least less championed... bands a platform.
It's a bit more than that though. All the content is chosen because we like it and see value in it. That makes it completely subjective... that also allows us to create a genuine 'voice' on this site as no-one is telling us we must have this or feature that. Fundamentally we wanted to come at it with the same excitement and thrill of sharing that we used to feel when we made mix tapes for friends as kids. That's all this is really, one large online glorified compilation tape for you.
Most importantly though, all the bands and film makers featured on this site are independent. Properly. And a lot of the time DIY.
We believe that every band we feature on this site has value. We hope that you'll discover some that you love and will support them. Buy CDs or mp3s from the bands you love. Watch them play. Buy a t-shirt. From what we can tell they don't want to be millionaires sitting on their arses sipping cocktails on Miami beach, they want to make a living and are offering something of value in exchange.
Music in the 21st century
The music industry isn't dying... music will never die... but what is happening is that (we believe anyway) people are getting fed up of being short changed by the main players. Years of substandard albums at over-inflated prices, with everything designed to keep feeding into their bottom-line, has caused a backlash of sorts. Some of that comes in the shape of illegal downloads, but more tellingly it comes in the shape of people not buying CDs. Do you think they're not buying CDs because they can steal the music, or because most of the CDs are crap?
Music will live on well past the inevitable collapse of the Majors, and great music will always sell. Independent music will flourish because it is being made for the love of music not to follow a trend or satisfy a fad. Real music fans... those who feel music... will always appreciate that and those bands will prevail.
Eventually mp3s and CDs will be sold for what they are worth, which is around 20 to 30 pence a track. Independent musicians will make some money from sales of their music, sure, but will earn their living from gigging and selling merchandise. Music is primal, so will always be best enjoyed at a live performance. Why won't a lot of music men like this new business model? Well, apart from 12 year old girls, who will actually go and watch the Sugerbabes et al?
The web is enabling us, regular people, to compete with the establishment on a more level playing field. And in fact, we, regular people, have an advantage if we stop trying to follow the old business model and blag our way to fame and fortune. The value of music, in terms of pound and dollars for tangible goods has fallen... and well it should, but the value of music in terms of nourishing the mind and soul will never diminish... and now there is a chance to make that the most important value... and make a fair living at the same time.
This is not only our belief but also, we guess, our philosophy for this site. We want to make a living doing this, so we can carry on doing it. But mostly we want to be able to give you, the users, a space where you can come and discover great independent music without having to sift through endless pages of MySpace and enable you to continue loving and supporting great music that actually matters.
