About Us
EyeSeeSound are three of us. We're all 'creatives' in our real lives. one does video and websites. One does graphic design and motion animation. One does sound recording and mixing. Together we do this, EyeSeeSound.tv, we have a small production company [website] and run a small DIY record label [website].
About EyeSeeSound.tv
This part of things is for us to try and point you towards great music, film, art, culture that we know of or have found. We believe very passionately that the majority of artistic output of value comes from the DIY, independent, underground scenes, rather than from the Major distributers or media outlets which we feel tend to peddle derivative, lowest common denominator, stack-em-high-sell-em-quick-then-drop-em sorts of bands, or bands past their best but that have simply become a huge economic snowball hurtling down a mountain of mediocrity threatening to crush the small towns of life affirming music nestling quietly at it's base.
So we try and give over a fair chunk of our online space to pretty unknown bands, or short films, animations, artists, etc., that are producing something artistically great but tend not to get a fair hearing. Of course, all this isn't to say that all bands, artists, comics, etc., which are more widely known are bland shite and we also feature some of the better more well known stuff as well... ultimately if it is great to listen to or watch, then there's no reason to penalise it because a lot of people know about it... for example, and as ridiculous as it may seem to you and us, not everyone will yet know of Bill Hicks or Bon Iver for example.
About the magazine
We used to have a variety of formats on the site, each one offering something different but all ultimately attempting to do the same thing, which is promote great music and culture. Eventually we realised that we had created a bit of a cluttered cacophony of unknown quantities and visiting the site didn't sign post people in an easy and engaging manner towards things we think they should be discovering. So we decided to rip it up and start again.
Because of our love for the aesthetic of print, vinyl artwork, design, photography and things of that ilk, and because we both love and push against the digital advancement of culture and art, we decided the most obvious and logical thing to do was to make a print magazine on the web. We didn't want to use the flash magazines that have started springing up, where you open a flash version of a print magazine, we wanted to have a website that looked like a magazine, that was a magazine, but could use video and audio too.
We also wanted to put a bit of ourselves into our output. There are so many music and cluture sites now that content management systems and blogs are so prevalant, and they all have value of course, but to us the idea of just whacking up content in a series of random posts without any rhyme or reason beyond 'it's news, get it out and rack up the page views' seemed a like a trick is being missed. So instead we have decided to painstakingly create the magazine so you, our viewer, have something tangible that you can engage with, that you can read over a period of visits, that looks kind of pretty and that is, we believe, kind of unique as far as music and culture websites go.
